To make the Bath Tea you will need:

1 cup Epsom salts (great for relaxation and muscle tension)
1 cup oatmeal (great for softening skin)
2 tablespoons dried lavender
20 drops lavender essential oil (or oil of choice, more or less, as desired)
2 disposable cone coffee filters (muslin and cheesecloth work also)
cotton twine or cord
bowl
spoon

Pour the Epson salt into a bowl and add the essential oil. Mix well until there are no visible lumps. Add the oatmeal, lavender and mix completely. Fill the two coffee filters and tie them with twine.

To use, add the tea bag to a cup of boiling water and let it steep for about five minutes before adding to the bath. This gift is sure to help mom soak her cares away.

2. Perfect Parfait

Making breakfast in bed for Mom is a tried-and-true classic, but this is no boring breakfast. This parfait takes breakfast to the next level, and best of all, it’s kid-friendly (no stove necessary.)

Don’t be intimidated by the idea of creating your own art. Acrylics and watercolors are very simple to use, and best of all. They can be cleaned up with soap and water!

These projects can be done with a minimal list of supplies such as:

Watercolor or acrylic paints
Brushes (assorted sizes)
Canvas or quality paper (look for watercolor paper, it’s very absorbent)

In no time, you will be on your way to painting your very own artwork. Best of all, it will be your name signed at the bottom of it.

2. If These Walls Could Talk as DIY Painting Projects

What would your walls say? They may be are begging for a makeover. If you feel like the walls are closing in on you, it may be time to freshen them up with a coat of paint.

When choosing paint for your walls, there are endless options. However, it is best, to begin with, the finish. If you go to your local hardware or box store, you will need to decide on one of the following finishes:

Flat – velvety, matte look,and hardest to clean
Gloss – most durable, and difficult to hide imperfections
Semi-Gloss – great for trim, and easy maintenance
Satin – light sheen, handles cleaning well
Eggshell – a light shine, easy to clean

But once you decide on a finish, there is an unlimited choice of colors. Be sure to use a drop cloth to protect your flooring and any furniture while painting. Take the time to tape off any trim to keep the edges neat.

3. Furniture Facelift as Dye Painting Projects

Don’t assume that furniture is more challenging to paint than walls. Gone are the days of stripping the furniture with strong chemicals and sanding it for days.

Try using Chalk Paint, it makes it so very simple. In most cases, it eliminates the need for stripping or even sanding!

Wipe down the furniture to clean it. If the surface is very rough, it may be best to give it a light sanding, but it’s up to you.

That’s it. It really is all that is needed to begin. Paint the furniture in your color of choice. Allow it to dry completely. Follow the paint with a coat of wax and DONE. And enjoy the fruits of your labors.

A new coat of paint can really transform a tired piece of furniture and brighten a space.

4. Smash and Pour

No, those aren’t wrestling moves. These are painting techniques…and they’re perfect for kiddos! They require no artistic skill and are a lot of fun.

Smash painting is the process of squeezing globs of paint onto a surface and then covering with it a plastic wrap and “smashing” the paint using anything like a cotton ball or even your hands to form unique artwork.

To create a pour painting, you guessed it, you pour the paint. Different color combinations and even the order the paints are poured will result in different paintings every time it’s truly unique and mesmerizing.

Maybe you’re reluctant to dig out your summer wardrobe of shorts, tanks, and sandals. If the idea of exposing your skin makes you cringe, try these DIY recipes to get your skin summer-ready.

These three, simple steps can be done at home for supple, glowing skin. Then, your toughest decision this summer will be which swimsuit to wear to the beach.

1. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate for Glowing Skin

Winter can leave your skin dry, patchy, and dull. If your arms and legs are looking a bit, well, lackluster, then this DIY scrub is exactly what you need to prep your skin for summer. This easy (and edible) sugar scrub recipe will leave your skin soft and smooth.

This sugar scrub will work to remove dead skin cells, avoid ingrown hairs and promote circulation. You will be left with soft glowing skin, sweet right?

You will need for Glowing Skin

Oil (try coconut oil, almond oil, grapeseed oil…experiment to find your favorite)
Granulated sugar (or brown sugar for sensitive skin)
Container with airtight lid

Mix 1 part oil with 2 parts sugar. Add oil slowly, mixing as you go. You want a sandy texture, nothing too wet. That’s it! Easy, right? You can store this scrub in a container for up to one month, or even give it as a gift!

Apply the scrub to damp skin, rubbing in a circular motion. Pay special attention to the skin on the knees and elbows. Shower off with warm water and apply your favorite moisturizer. Hello, soft, glowing skin!

2. Wear a Mask

No, this is not a mask recommended by the CDC. However, this mask will definitely be appreciated by your skin!

Masks can help improve the appearance of pores, remove excess oils and hydrate your skin. This mask will help reduce inflammation while hydrating your skin.

You will need:

1/4 ripe avocado
½ tsp. honey
1 tsp. plain yogurt

Place a ripe avocado into a bowl and mash well with a fork, add the honey and yogurt and mix well until combined. Apply the avocado mask to clean skin (avoiding the eyes) and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes, or until dry. Rinse off with lukewarm water. If you have any mixture left, feel free to eat it…yum!

3. Hydration Situation for Glowing Skin

The greatest thing you can do for your best summer skin is to hydrate! Drink water, a lot of it. Great, glowing skin begins on the inside. A healthy diet, that is rich in antioxidants and vitamins, combined with water, will produce beautiful, radiant skin. Drinking water helps flush out toxins and improve skin tone.

Using a good moisturizer also helps improve your skin texture and tone. Choose a rich moisturizer that is fragrance-free (to avoid any inflammation or irritation.)

Look for a product that includes aloe, which is soothing to your skin as well as hyaluronic acid which helps hydrate dry skin. Moisturizer is best when applied to damp skin. Use your favorite product right after you get out of the shower.

Have an at-home spa day! Exfoliate your skin using the sugar scrub. Follow that with the avocado mask. Last, be sure to eat well and drink LOTS of water. Your skin will be summer-ready in no time!

So, the idea of a new baby in the house might not seem like a great idea for your summertime fun. However, these rock babies are the quietest babies you’ll ever meet.

Have your kids paint a rock baby (complete with diaper) to spend their summer with. (For a fun variation, have them create a rock pet, like this.)

You will need:

rocks
googly eyes
scissors
felt
mini Safety-pins
acrylic paint (colors of choice)
permanent marker

Wash the rocks and let them dry. Once dry, paint the rock the chosen color (it may take more than one coat). Once the paint is dry, add the eyes and a mouth. Cut the felt for a diaper, like this.

Have your child name their new friend. Make extra rock babies or pets and give them as gifts, or add them to your summer garden.

2. Tried-and-True Tie-Dyed Shirts as Kids Craft

Have your kids dye a shirt or even a beach towel in some fun, bright colors.

You will need:

White t-shirt (or chosen item to dye)
Tie-dye kit
Rubber bands (or zip ties)
Plastic bag (one per item)

Wash your shirts, or at least wet them. Choose a pattern for banding your shirt or item, as these options. Follow the instructions on the dye kit. (HINT: this project is best done outside, so the dye doesn’t ruin anything.)

After applying the dye to your shirt/item, place it in a plastic bag and let it sit for at least 24 hours. After the 24 hours is up, rinse with cold water and run through the dryer to set the color.

Show off your colorful shirt around town this summer.

3. Squirt-gun Shoot Out

Those hot summer days can really drag on. When the kids are itching for something fun to do and you’re at your wit’s end, why not try painting? Don’t think you’re kids are interested in painting? What about squirt guns?

This is no ordinary painting. This summer project just screams, “FUN!” This unique activity is sure to be a hit with kids, especially the boys.

You will need:

Water pistols (like Nerf guns or even spray bottles)

Glue

Now, just sit back and watch the creativity pour out of your kids. Maybe their monster will have several eyes or arms? There are no rules, the sillier, the better.

5. Where the Wind Blows as Diy Kids Craft

Keep your kids busy with this summer craft! Have them make a beautiful, musical wind chime. Wind chimes can be made out of almost anything, so this project costs very little.

An item to secure everything to (tin can, cup or even a branch)
Cord or string
Chimes (old keys, cds, beads…anything beautiful and noisy)

If you would rather enjoy your summer vacation by the water, try searching for a rental near the beach. Best Mochi Ice Cream Recipe (Simple!)

Hello, readers! Today I will write about one of my favorite desserts. I had my first taste of mochi ice cream at a Japanese restaurant some years ago, and it was love at first bite. The cold chewy treat without overbearing sweetness was the perfect cap for dinner. Since then, I had tended to purchase the dessert from specialty international markets and Costco. But as you likely realize (from this blog), I love DIY projects and preparing my own edible goodies. So more recently, I have been making my own mochi ice cream. I am relieved to say that it is among the easier projects on this website. There are still some tidbits you should keep in mind before you get started:

Tips for Mochi Ice Cream

Do not use your bare hands or utensils without wetting them. Mochi is extremely sticky. Cornstarch is also your friend.
Be sure to wet the tools immediately after you are done, as this will make the process of mochi removal much easier!
Also be sure that the utensils and the ice cream are…cold. Warmer utensils and melting ice cream will make the process more difficult.

Equipment

Tray
Our family non-stick Teflon sheets are ideal, but parchment paper is okay too.
Plastic wrap
Ice cream scoop or spoon
Measuring cup
Bowl
Whisk

Ingredients

1.5 Cups Ice Cream (my choice: vanilla)
1 Cup glutinous sweet rice flour
¼ Cup Sugar
1 Cup Water
Corn or potato starch

Instructions

To start, line the tray with non-stick Teflon sheet or parchment paper. Use an ice cream scoop or a spoon to scoop 2 tablespoon sized scoops of ice cream. There should be 10-12 scoops. Line them up on the tray, then place the tray into the freezer.
Mix the sweet rice flour, water, and sugar in a microwavable bowl, then cover with plastic and microwave for about a minute.
Now, you can take out the mixture and place it on the counter. Be sure to take care of any lumps by properly mixing, and whisking if necessary. Then cover again and microwave for another minute.
After wetting the spatula with water, mix again, and then microwave for a final time for 30-45 seconds.
Put down a great piece of Teflon sheet (or parchment paper) on the counter. It should then be covered with cornstarch.
After dipping the spatula in water, use it to pick up dough from the doughy mixture, to be placed on the sheet with cornstarch. Dust more cornstarch on the top portion of the dough.

Must Follow

You can now begin to roll the dough covered with cornstarch into rectangular shapes. Just be certain that all parts of the dough are dusted with cornstarch, as this is essential.
Now put the Teflon sheet/parchment paper with the dough on a cookie sheet and then into your refrigerator. Wait for half an hour.
Following the wait, you can cut circles on the dough, using a cookie or a biscuit cutter. If you are unable to attain these, you can use a drinking glass.
Pick up one of the circular pieces of dough, and then take out single scoop of ice cream from the freezer. Place the scoop of ice cream into the center of the circular dough. Be sure to wrap the dough around the ice cream, with the edges meeting at a central point to form an enclosed sphere. Then squeeze to ensure a seal.
You can then wrap each ball of mochi with plastic wrap in order to conserve the shape. Follow these steps for each circular dough/scoop of ice cream until you have the mochi ice cream balls.
Place the finished product inside your freezer and wait for at least two hours before taking out for consumption.
After you take out the ice cream, be sure to let it sit for a few minutes, as it will be a more ideal texture once the flour is softened.

Although the title touches upon the beautifying effect it has on your complexion, turmeric is also known to help prevent acne and treat its scars, as well as relieve other skin conditions such as psoriasis. Turmeric

Turmeric is the name of the spice sourced from the namesake plant. This super-spice has many uses in natural healthcare, the kitchen, and even dying clothes. It is the effects on your skin that are truly remarkable.

General Skin Health and Aging

The spice contains several antioxidants that prevent damage from free radicals to collagen (Source). That is thought to be a key component of skin aging. The antioxidants also protect against environmental factors. Preventing skin damage throughout life is crucial to prevent the aging of the skin. And for already existing wrinkles, turmeric’s function as an exfoliator will smoothen their appearance.

Acne

Turmeric is a powerful weapon against acne (Source). Because it is a natural antibiotic, the bacteria which cause pimples are eliminated before causing breakouts. Additionally, curcuminoids have an anti-inflammatory (calming) effect on breakouts if they do occur. So now that we got the science out of the way, let us get to the recipes. Today we will have four recipes, with the option of choosing one for our needs.

Simple Turmeric Mask

This may be particularly suitable for those with sensitive skin, as it has the fewest ingredients. It should provide a general benefit against free radicals and the environment, while also calming skin problems.

Ingredients:

1 tbs yogurt
¼ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp raw honey

Directions:

Mix the three ingredients.
Apply to your face.
Wait 20 minutes.
Finally, rinse.
Voila!

Turmeric Glow Mask

To leave your skin with a noticeable shine!

Ingredients:

1.5 tbs of flour
1 tbs of milk
1 tsp of turmeric powder
½ tsp of honey (local and organic may be preferable)

Directions:

Mix the four ingredients slowly.
Following the application of a thin layer, wait 15-20 minutes for it to dry.
Rinse.
I recommend applying a moisturizer.

Turmeric Exfoliating Scrub

Turmeric removes the dead skin while also clearing the pores. This scrub is effective both against visible aging and acne.

Ingredients:

Apple cider vinegar
3 tbs milk
2 tbs flour. You can use regular flour or rice flour.

3 tbs milk
½ tsp honey

Directions:

Touch the apple cider with a cotton ball and then swipe it on your face.
Wait for 5-10 minutes.
Mix the other ingredients slowly in a small bowl.
Apply to your face and leave it for 20 minutes.
You can now rinse with warm water.
Moisturize!
Repeat every 3-4 days.

Moisturizing Turmeric Mask

This mask is sure to leave your skin hydrated. The nutrients in milk/yogurt will nourish your skin.

Ingredients:

1 tbs lemon juice
2 tbs milk or yogurt
¼ tbs turmeric

Directions:

Mix our ingredients gently.
Apply the finished product to your face.
Leave on for 20 minutes.

Dye for mental health: As a DIY blogger, I love sharing my favorite projects with you. I have reaped several benefits from these projects. Whether it is the creation of a tasty meal or a relaxing bath bomb-infused water, all these projects somehow make me (or in some cases my loved ones) feel better about Dye for Mental Health. Research indicates doing crafts and artwork is correlated with several positive physical and psychological outcomes. Physically, the activities reduce weight gain and bodily pain, while psychologically increasing “social functioning”. That basically means it can promote socializing in a healthy way. We can all use more functional relationships, whether with our families, friends, or coworkers. : ).

Scientists believe the positive mood enhancement is also due to the activities’ increase of the flow state. “Flow” in psychology references being in the zone while crafting, baking, or whichever involved activity you may enjoy. And being in the zone, it turns out, is pleasurable.

Decreases Depression

Major depression is a serious mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness and/or loss of interest. For some, it can even lead to hopelessness. Research shows projects such as crafting and making cakes can reduce negative psychological and physical measures commonly found in depression. Scientists believe these improvements also may result from an increase in the flow state.

Being lost in thought itself is known by scientists to be biased toward negative emotions. This is what they call “negative bias”. Depression, even worse, often includes rumination about negative thoughts. Fortunately, the flow state involves the conscious directing of attention to the project. And just as it was mentioned above section, this leads to pleasurable feelings.

Alleviates Anxiety

Whereas depression often involves rumination on the past, anxiety causes a preoccupation with the future. These are often thoughts about outcomes we would like to avoid. We can see how the flow could help here too. Instead of focusing on the past or the future, partaking in such projects allows us to be present with the activity at hand. It is difficult to be lost in thought when you must attend to the finer details of a project!

A study validated this by showing art allows a person to forget about their condition. We can generalize this to our DIY projects, just as other studies show what is essential here is the flow state. Another study showed the scores of anxiety were decreased while working on a project.

Activity Recommendations of Dye for Mental Health

Here is a list of activities that may help our emotional health (based on research!). Some are projects, like what we recommend here, while others are creative activities mentioned in the research studies.

Bake cookies. This could be our recipe. It offers the flow state while baking, sensory pleasure upon tasting, and a sense of accomplishment afterward.
Make drawings or paintings.
Learn to play an instrument. It is never too late!
Become an amateur photographer. Nature, fashion, still life…you have freedom!
Join a knitting group. You could learn this new skill and practice it, all the while socializing.

What matters is that the project demands our attention. Our goal is to take our minds off things. The expression of creativity also seems to be helpful, so please do not be afraid to experiment. There is no failure. Just start!

The Best Green Smoothie Recipe

I just love green smoothies. In fact, I prepare myself a green smoothie most mornings of the week as part of my breakfast. The refreshing bliss is quite easy to prepare, even while juggling innumerable tasks. The fact that it is so healthy makes it a guilt-free treat, lets try the Green Smoothie Recipe.

Green smoothies also afford the possibility to select macro and micronutrients! That means while I can select the flavor to my preference, I can also choose what I believe I need the most. Protein powder and coconut oil tend to be my favorite macro additions for balance.

With the ratio of fruits to vegetables, I prefer 6:4, which is 60% fruits and 40% vegetables. I find that makes the greens bearable without sacrificing their benefits. Ever the nutrition buff, I also included some nutrients each ingredient houses.

Ingredients

2 Bananas – for your source vitamins B6 and B12, as well as potassium.

1 Cup Water – hydration!

A Cup Coconut Milk – digestive aid and electrolytes.

1 Cup Spinach – vitamins K, A, C, B2, B6, and calcium.

A Cup Kale – quite like spinach.

1 Cup Pineapple – vitamin C really.

Alternate Ingredients

You could spice it up with other fruits and vegetables. I sometimes like to mix it up because it offers a way out of the mundane. Keep in mind that particularly the berries can change the color of your shake! So, it may not quite be a green smoothie. Just keep in mind our 6:4 ratio for vegetables to fruits, or feel free to explore. The following are just some of the options:

Solids –

Swiss Chard – numerous minerals such as magnesium, calcium, copper, and zinc. Vitamin E.

Blueberries – my absolute favorite! They contain copper, folate, manganese, choline, beta-carotene, and vitamins A and E. Anthocyanins are the new rage in nutrition!

Strawberries – iron, copper, magnesium, and phosphorus.

Cherries – potassium, calcium, folic acid, and vitamin C.

Oranges – vitamins A and C.

I prefer making smoothies with coconut milk and water. But you could always choose from one (or more!) of the following. I also recommend switching around the liquid base to find your favorite!

Liquids –

Almond milk – the source of the antioxidant vitamin E.

Rice milk – calcium and vitamins A and D.

Oat milk – good source of B vitamins such as B2 and B12.

Coconut water – potassium and other electrolytes.

Other Add-Ins

Protein Powder – surprisingly energizing. You could go with whey powder or one of your favorite vegan sources.

Collagen – could benefit your skin, joints, and gut!

Coconut Oil – may encourage the body to burn fat, raise HDL (the good cholesterol).

Ground Flaxseed – fiber and omega 3s.

Bee Pollen – may benefit immunity.

Nuts – most nuts contain a healthy amount of protein, vitamin E, and fiber.

Chia Seeds – more protein and fiber!

Preparation for Green Smoothie Recipe

Now that the ingredients are finally sorted, let’s actually prepare the smoothie.

Freeze the vegetables and fruits rather than using ice. In case of the bananas, be sure to peel them first. Use a freezer bag if you would like to freeze the vegetables (as I do!).
Add the water and/or other liquid ingredient(s). This will be crucial to avoiding the settling of solid ingredients.
Pack the frozen vegetables in a measuring cup. Be sure that they are tightly pressed. Add them into the blender and blend slow to medium until the chunks are gone.
Finally, add the fruits and the other add ins.
Start blending at the low setting then gradually speed it up.
Pour into a cup.
Enjoy!

Are green smoothies healthy?

Absolutely. In addition to the many nutrients, smoothies tend to have plenty of fiber. That makes each serving a filling treat to assist in weight management. It may also benefit your gut biome. Smoothies are also great in that you can control the selection and proportion of each ingredient. I make sure to include some walnuts in addition to the macro add-ins. You could increase the number of veggies relative to fruits if you would like an even greener smoothie.

2. Do you recommend using sweeteners?

I personally do not use any sweeteners because I find the fruits sweet enough. But if I had to, I would opt for a natural sweetener such as raw honey. Moderation here may be key as well!

3. Why do you love blueberries so much?

Because they are truly a super nutrient. Anthocyanins seem to fight cancer and inflammation while improving mental sharpness. Plus, I have always loved the taste of blueberries!
